Whilst aciclovir and penciclovir start working once the virus enters the cells, docosanol acts as a barrier to help block the virus from entering healthy cells. Other anti-viral treatments contain aciclovir and penciclovir which work when the cells have already been infected with the cold sore virus. How to use Blistex Cold Sore Cream Clinically proven Blistex Cold Sore Cream is most effective when applied in the early stages of a cold sore. Start using Blistex Cold Sore Cream as soon as you get any cold sore symptoms. These include redness, itching, pain, tingling or prickling. Apply to the affected area 5 times a day, at approximately 3 hour intervals. Continue use until the cold sore is healed, usually after 4-6 days but to a maximum of 10 days.
